Firefighter Turnout Gear Cancer Attorneys & Firefighter Cancer Lawsuits

Overview

Corboy & Demetrio is currently representing firefighters who have cancer and other illnesses after exposure to the dangerous and toxic group of chemicals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are known as PFAS, and are potentially linked to firefighters' turnout gear.

The Danger of PFAS in Turnout Gear to Firefighters and their Families

PFAS are sometimes called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down quickly and stay around for a longtime, posing danger to both firefighters and their families, potentially causing chronic illness and cancer to both firefighters and those who come into contact with their turnout gear.

Long-term exposure to PFAS in high concentrations causes a buildup, which has been linked to cancers, including testicular, liver, colorectal, kidney and bladder.

PFAS and Turnout Gear

Turnout gear is manufactured from textiles that are either created using certain PFAS or are later treated with PFAS to create water resistance.  Recent studies show turnout gear exposes not only the firefighter wearing the gear, but also family members and other people handling the gear, to significant levels of PFAS through skin absorption and through ingesting or breathing the chemicals shed from the gear, including through dust.

PFAS and Firefighting Turnout Gear

PFAS are associated with a wide range of cancers and other illnesses, including:

  • Kidney Cancer
  • Testicular Cancer
  • Liver Cancer
  • Bladder Cancer
  • Breast Cancer
  • Colorectal Cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
  • Leukemia
  • Infertility

Corboy & Demetrio is investigating the potential liability of both the manufacturers of the chemicals and manufacturers of the gear.  The firm currently represents firefighters throughout Illinois and is accepting cases nationwide.
