Corboy & Demetrio Applauds Illinois Supreme Court’s Anti-Bullying Efforts
A new Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism study has found bullying is pervasive among lawyers, especially for women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+, young lawyers and those with disabilities.
Corboy & Demetrio applauds the Commission’s courageous work and condemns bullying in all forms, whether it occurs in the workplace, the courtroom, or the conference room.
The Commission’s Report, which is titled, “Bullying in the Legal Profession: A Study of Illinois Lawyers’ Experiences and Recommendations for Change,” is based on data from a study of more than 6,000 Illinois lawyers. According to the report, the most commonly reported forms of bullying included verbal intimidation and demeaning nonverbal behaviors, excessive criticism, unrealistic work demands, rumors, and the withholding of important work information.
“Our findings should be a wake-up call that change is needed now. All lawyers practicing today can lead by example, raise awareness about bullying and its impact, and make the legal profession more inclusive, civil, and respectful,” the report concludes.
