Corboy & Demetrio Obtains $9.5M Settlement for Patient whose Artery was Mistakenly Tied
Corboy & Demetrio has obtained a settlement of $9.5 million on behalf of a 40-year-old woman whose artery was mistakenly tied off during surgery for mitral valve replacement at University of Chicago Hospital.
Not only was the woman’s circumflex artery inadvertently tied off, the mistake was not discovered for several weeks, according to Corboy & Demetrio partner David R. “Chip” Barry, Jr. By the time the problem was discovered, the patient had severe heart damage necessitating a heart transplant in September of 2013.
“The surgical complication that resulted in the transplant was something that should have been detected before she even left the operating room,” Barry said.
“The University recognized this care was not up to their standards, and the settlement funds will ensure she maximizes the quality and dignity of her life ahead. She is a wonderful woman who deserves nothing but good things going forward. She has more than earned them. It was a real privilege to represent her,” Barry added.
