Corboy & Demetrio Files Lawsuit on Behalf of Student whose Thumb was Severed by School Table Saw

Corboy & Demetrio Partner Daniel S. Kirschner has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Rolling Meadows High School student whose thumb was traumatically amputated by a school table saw.

The lawsuit filed against Township High School District 214 alleges that the district was negligent in its failure to properly maintain and repair the table saw, and was willful and wanton in the manner in which it supervised its students, resulting in the January 24, 2012 incident.

Specifically at issue in the lawsuit is the allegation that the school district allowed the table saw’s blade guard and anti-kickback device to fall into a state of disrepair, which the school then removed from the table saw without replacing them. The suit also alleges that school district failed to purchase and put into use a safer alternatively designed table saw which incorporated flesh detecting technology. Notwithstanding these known safety deficiencies with the table saw, the suit alleges, the school district’s Tech Crew director continued to assign the table saw to his students for unsupervised use.
