$40 Million Record-Setting Verdict in I-55 Car-Truck Collision

In a record verdict in Cook County Circuit Court, a jury awarded $40 million to a Palos Hills, Illinois, woman and her husband. Diane Vasilion, represented by Thomas Demetrio, suffered massive brain damage in a car-truck collision. The collision occurred when Mrs. Vasilion was driving on a ramp leading to the outbound lanes of the Stevenson Expressway. At the same time, a 7,500-pound metal container loaded on a semi-tractor flatbed traveling in the opposite direction struck the overpass, causing the container to fall onto the expressway. A semi-tractor trailer swerved to avoid the container, struck it, crossed the median and hit the car being driven by Mr. Vasilion. The family was awarded $34 million in compensatory damages to Mrs. Vasilion and a record $6 million for the husband’s loss of consortium claim.
