Medical Negligence
Corboy & Demetrio lawyers have represented hundreds of individuals injured or killed as the result of negligent treatment by doctors, nurses, hospitals, and other health-care individuals and facilities.
With our background of handling medical negligence cases for over 50 years, we have experience in all aspects of the practice and have the resources necessary to investigate, prepare and retain experts to represent our clients and secure for them fair and full compensation.
Our medical negligence team’s work has resulted in exceptional and record-setting verdicts and settlements for our clients. We have acquired over $3 billion in settlements and verdicts and have attained more than 500 settlements and verdicts in excess of $1 million.
Following are some examples of our work:
- Represented by Corboy & Demetrio partners, David R. Barry, Jr., and Susan J. Schwartz, the surviving family of a 34 year-old mother, who died after giving birth because the doctor and nurse failed to properly treat her high blood pressure, was awarded $22 million - a record-setting verdict for the death of a woman in Illinois
- The day before final arguments were to take place, named partner, Thomas A. Demetrio, obtained a $17.5 million settlement on behalf of a 33 year-old former fashion model who suffered a hemorrhagic stroke when a large aneurysm in her brain ruptured after an emergency room physician failed to diagnose a “warning leak” from the aneurysm ten days earlier
- Barry R. Chafetz, Margaret M. Power and Shawn S. Kasserman represented a family who settled their lawsuit for $7.75 million on behalf of their son who was not properly treated for a high level of bilirubin shortly after birth
- A controller for an international corporation and his wife, represented by partner David R. Barry, Jr., agreed to settle their lawsuit for $19.5 million for the failure of Evanston Hospital to properly treat the controller’s stroke
- A family agreed to a settlement of $11.5 million with Northwestern Memorial Hospital for the failure of the hospital to deliver their baby boy in a timely manner, resulting in the baby being born with brain damage and cerebral palsy. Attorney David R. Barry, Jr. represented the plaintiffs
- After an eight day jury trial in Lake County, Illinois, attorneys Barry R. Chafetz and Shawn S. Kasserman, secured a record-setting $6 million verdict for the wrongful death of a woman who died while receiving anesthesia
- The family of an 18 year-old boy agreed to a $6.75 million settlement with the University of Illinois hospitals for not properly treating an abdominal infection that lead to the boy’s death

- In another medical malpractice case, Susan procured a $9 million settlement for a 74 year-old nurse’s aide who suffered bilateral below-the-knee amputations as a result of the failure to timely diagnose and treat an acute arterial blockage
- Corboy & Demetrio won a record $16.5 million verdict - the highest jury award in an obstetric medical negligence case in Cook County - on behalf of a 7-year-old girl who suffered brain damage at birth due to the negligence of a suburban Chicago hospital and obstetrician. Kenneth T. Lumb obtained an $11 million verdict against the University of Chicago Hospitals on behalf of a south-side child who suffered brain damage at birth. Thomas A.
