The FDA issued a new safety alert today regarding the potential danger of endoscopes, which are causing patients to develop serious and sometimes fatal infections, after re-use.
This alert is intended to inform medical professionals that the design of the endoscope in question may impede effective cleaning. It also warns that from January 2013 through December 2014, the FDA received 75 reports involving this type of endoscope involving 135 patients in the United States relating to possible microbial transmission from reprocessed duodenoscopes.
