Corboy & Demetrio's Commitment to Fight Gun Violence Cited on New Media Web Site
American Lawyer Media Publishes Story on First Case of the New YearJanuary 18, 2000
Corboy & Demetrio partner Francis Patrick Murphy was featured in an article posted on the first day of operation of American Lawyer Media's new web site, illinois.law.com., a site that covers all aspects of the state's legal community.
Murphy had filed the first case of the new year in Cook County Circuit Court, a wrongful death case against the manufacturer of a handgun that was used to murder Chicago Police Officer John Knight in January, 1999. Murphy's lawsuit accuses the manufacturer, Sturm-Ruger, of flooding the market with handguns in an effort to circumvent Chicago's strict gun control laws, knowing that the guns would be transported into the city. As reporter Molly McDonough wrote in her story:
"At 7:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, partner Francis Patrick Murphy braved the cold so his wrongful-death case - The Estate of John Knight v. Sturm Ruger & Co. et al. - would be the first Cook County filing of the new year. Murphy, a 25-year veteran attorney, got the distinction - case No. 00 L 000001 - and the publicity. News reports about the filing appeared on local television and radio broadcasts as well as in the local newspapers."
Murphy and founding partner Philip H. Corboy have long been active in the fight to prevent gun violence. The pair appeared before the Illinois Appellete Court over 15 years ago in one of the first lawsuits against gun manufacturers, Riordan v. International Armament Corporation
