C&D Settles Nine Cases Totaling Over $25 Million In June
July 5, 2000In one remarkable month, nine C&D attorneys settled nine lawsuits - each for over a million dollars - in cases ranging from a product liability suit against an automobile manufacturer to medical malpractice actions against area hospitals.
Susan Schwartz negotiated a $7 million settlement in O'Kane v. Chicago Osteopathic Medical Center, et al., a case that received front-page coverage in the Chicago Sun-Times. Joann O'Kane died of cervical cancer after the hospital said her pap smear test revealed no cancerous growths. The firm also settled Crisp v. MacNeal Memorial Hospital for $3 million, Garrett v. Children's Memorial Hospital, for $3.5 million, and Murphy v. Chicago Ridge Cab Co., for $1.7 million.
Other million dollar settlements in June included Coppens v. Pujdak for $5.75 million, a case handled by C&D's newest partner, Shawn S. Kasserman. In addition, partner Michael K. Demetrio and Kenneth T. Lumb settled Jackson v. City of Chicago for $ 1.5 million, while Edward G. Willer negotiated a $1.4 million accord in Dioguardi v. Toyota Fork Lift
