9/11 Terrorist Victims Obtain Settlements
May 26, 2004Corboy & Demetrio has successfully completed the pro bono representation of four families of victims of the 9/11 disaster. Each of the four families elected to participate in the Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). Corboy & Demetrio, working with the VCF and its Special Master, Kenneth Feinberg, and his extremely dedicated staff in Washington and New York, were able to bring a measure of closure to these families.
"The system developed and implemented by Special Master Kenneth Feinberg was extremely efficient and fair," stated Michael K. Demetrio, the partner of Corboy & Demetrio who provided pro bono representation to the four families. "The families truly felt they were treated well and fairly, and they walked away from the process feeling justice was fully served as best as it could be considering the circumstances," said Demetrio, who is also the current President of the Chicago Bar Association.
"High praises are due Mr. Feinberg and his staff. His dedication and efforts have provided an alternative dispute resolution process that provided a fair compensatory system to the families who had loved ones taken by the most horrific act of terrorism ever known to our country. Through the efforts of Mr. Feinberg, these citizens of our country feel well served and protected. I cannot emphasize enough the great degree of cooperation, efficiency and professionalism that the VCF administration provided to these families," Demetrio added.
The four victims of the 9/11 attack whose families Mr. Demetrio and the Corboy & Demetrio firm provided pro bono representation are:
1) Kathryn LaBorie, a flight attendant on United flight 175;
2) Mari-Rae Sopper was a passenger on American Airlines flight 77;
3) Christine Olender, General Manager of Windows on the World;
4) Susan Sauer, Managing Director for Marsh McLennan, who was attending a meeting on the 100th floor of the North Tower.
