Corboy & Demetrio Uniformly Judged to be the Best of the Best

Corboy & Demetrio’s success is unparalleled – our firm has tried or settled cases worth nearly $4 billion -- representing victims and their families in serious personal injury and wrongful death cases. Of the nearly $4 billion, more than 600 settlements or verdicts were in excess of $1 million.

Our attorneys show extraordinary leadership in the legal community.  Our firm is the only Chicago law firm to have had four former Chicago Bar Association Presidents.  It is also the only Illinois firm to have had four past Presidents of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.

In 2015, the National Law Journal selected Corboy & Demetrio Co-founder Thomas A. Demetrio to its inaugural “Top 50 Litigation Trailblazers and Pioneers,” noting that he alone has negotiated more than $1 billion in settlements and that the firm, in its representation of victims of the Tylenol cyanide poisonings in 1982, was a “catalyst” for today’s tamperproof packaging of drugs.  The National Law Journal also selected Corboy & Demetrio to 2015 Elite Trial Lawyers in the area of Medical Malpractice.

U.S. News & World Report named Corboy & Demetrio to “2016 Best Law Firms” for the sixth consecutive year, since the award’s inception, in the areas of plaintiffs’ personal injury, medical malpractice and commercial litigation.

The firm, year in and year out, garners the highest honors in the legal profession, attaining elite designations from Best Lawyers in America, Leading Lawyers, Illinois Super Lawyers and Lawdragon.

Corboy & Demetrio lawyers were selected in record numbers as Leading Lawyers by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company in 2015.  Thirteen lawyers were given the prestigious designation, which is more than any other personal injury firm in Illinois.  The peer-reviewed network recognizes only the top 5% of all Illinois lawyers.

Thomas Demetrio was selected as one of the Top Ten Personal Injury Lawyers in Illinois by Leading Lawyers, ranking second.   Mr. Demetrio was also selected as one of the Top Ten Leading Lawyers in all practice areas in the entire state, ranking third, and as one of the Top Ten Consumer Lawyers in the state, ranking second.

All fourteen Corboy & Demetrio lawyers were named Illinois Super Lawyers and Rising Stars for 2016.  Limited to the top 5% of all Illinois attorneys, Super Lawyers are chosen by their peers and through the independent research of Law & Politics Magazine.

Thomas Demetrio was named to the Top 10 List of Illinois Super Lawyers, ranking second in the entire state out of more than 91,000 Illinois lawyers.  It’s his fifth consecutive year for this designation, and he’s been on the Top 100 Illinois Super Lawyers list since the award’s inception.

Seven other partners at Corboy & Demetrio have been named Illinois Super Lawyers each consecutive year since the inception of Super Lawyers in 2005, including David R. “Chip” Barry, Robert J. Bingle, Philip Harnett Corboy, Jr., Michael K. Demetrio, Francis Patrick Murphy, Susan J. Schwartz and Rene A. Torrado, Jr.   Daniel S. Kirschner became a partner and an Illinois Super Lawyer in 2013.  Kenneth T. Lumb and Edward G. Willer became partners in 2015 and both were already Super Lawyers.  Associate Attorney Michelle M. Kohut was chosen as an IL Super Lawyer for the third year.  Associate Attorney William T. Gibbs was selected as an IL Super Lawyer for the first time.  Associate Attorney Matthew T. Jenkins was named to Rising Stars for 2016 for the fifth consecutive year.  Only 2.5% of eligible attorneys in Illinois are selected to Rising Stars.

For the 30th consecutive year, Thomas Demetrio was selected to Best Lawyers in America, 2016 Edition.  Thomas and five other Corboy & Demetrio partners were selected by their peers for inclusion to the elite Best Lawyers list.  They include Robert J. Bingle, David R. “Chip” Barry, Jr., Philip Harnett Corboy, Jr., Michael K. Demetrio and Rene A. Torrado, Jr.  Best Lawyers honored Thomas Demetrio as the Medical Malpractice Attorney of the Year in Chicago in 2011, and Chip Barry in 2014, respectively.

In 2015, Demetrio was also named to “50 Legends of the Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America,” by Lawdragon Magazine, calling him, “the dean of the Chicago trial bar.”  As a “Legend,” Thomas was one of only 50 attorneys nationwide who earned a spot on the elite Lawdragon 500 every year since the award’s inception a decade ago.  Thomas is in good company on the Legends list, which includes U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy.

Philip Corboy, Jr. and Francis Patrick Murphy were also selected to the prestigious 2015 Lawdragon 500 Leading Lawyers in America.
