When my children were little, one of my pet peeves was that they would not turn off the lights when they left a room.  If it was dark and they were going upstairs to get something from their rooms, they would turn on the upstairs hall light; stop in and use the bathroom leaving the lights on; go to their room; grab what they needed and come back downstairs leaving their room, bathroom and hallway lights on.  I always saw it as an unnecessary waste of energy and money lighting an area that did not need it.  A compromise was achieved: I installed presence detectors.  They had light when needed; I had lights turned off when not needed.         Read more >

The family of a woman who went into the hospital for a one-day surgery has settled a wrongful death claim filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County on behalf of her estate for $2,500,000. An order approving the settlement was entered by the Honorable Kathy M. Flanagan.

Zach’s Law, named after Zachary Tran, was signed today by Gov. Quinn and has extra meaning for Corboy & Demetrio because partner Shawn Kasserman represented Zach’s family in their lawsuit arising from the incident in which an unanchored goal killed their son.  The manufacturer of the goal, the soccer association and the park district agreed to compensate the Tran family $3 million and to stop selling that design of goal.   Read more >
